Are you required to have a Bachelor’s degree in order to be a police officer?
No, there is no specification to have a degree in order to become a police officer here at the Vacaville Police Department. You must, however, complete a P.O.S.T. approved Basic Police Academy. Though a degree is not required, it is very desirable and a good way to further your career. The City of Vacaville does offer a pay increase if the candidate has a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college. Knowledge is power!
How old do you have to be to work for the Vacaville Police Department?
Currently you must be 21 years or older to be employed as a Police Officer. There are other jobs such as Community Service Officer, Dispatcher and Records clerks, etc. that do not have the minimum age requirement of 21 years old or older.
If I committed a crime in my past, am I disqualified from employment at a police department?
Each candidate's background investigation is a case by case basis. However, a felony conviction does disqualify you from our process.
Are there opportunities to work in specialty units?
There are several different specialty units you can earn within your career at The Vacaville Police Department. Our specialty units include K9 Unit, Community Response Unit, VICE, Gang Enforcement Team, Youth Services, Special Victim Unit Traffic and more!
What are the shift hours at the police department?
We usually work 4-10 hours shifts. There are times where overtime is mandatory and you will be working longer than your assigned shift. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work. We all play a part in making the department successful.
How long is the probationary period for new hires, laterals?
The probationary period for new-hires is 18 months, 12 months for laterals.
Am I able to do a ride-along with a police officer?
Yes! We currently are accepting ride-along applications for all candidates interested in The Vacaville Police Department. Come into the police department and fill out an application. We will try to get you scheduled for a ride-along ASAP. Please remember to bring your ID for a records check prior to your ride-along. It is important you bring a good attitude, listening ear and most importantly, your A-game!
Is there a physical fitness test I have to pass to become a police officer?
Yes. There is a physical agility test you must pass to be considered an eligible candidate. This is the first step of the hiring process for The Vacaville Police Department. The test consists of a 1.5 mile running portion along with other physical agility evaluations. Make sure you are ready for the challenge, come prepared!
